Greir Eargle, president of Saluda Realty and Construction, one of the top real estate companies in the area, said that people come to him seeking Saluda Real Estate out for a reason. "The people, who come to see us don´t want to be in a town," he said. "They want two or three acres, no gates or sidewalks, traffic or crime. We don´t have fancy supermarkets or malls and we don´t have a golf course, but we do have beauty and quaintness with ´old-timey´ stores and a two-block main street in the National Register of Historic Places. I think they seek out Saluda for the same reasons my dad did. It is old-fashioned, charming, peaceful and friendly." While Saluda has the appeal of a quiet, sleepy town, beneath it lies copious opportunites for construction and building. Eargle pointed out that in a recent North Carolina survey, Polk County was ranked fifth in personal income. Saluda in particular, he said, has a thriving second-home market. "The prices of homes in Saluda have gone up dramatically in the last few years. Home lots have increased from $25,000-35,000 up to $75,000. People are also paying $500,000 just for second homes located in Saluda. Some of the price increase is due to the higher building costs, but, a lot has to do with the growing popularity of Saluda Real Estate."
